The Church, Convent and Cloisters of Santa Sofia
XVI secolo
The Church, Convent and Cloisters of Santa Sofia can be found in Gravina in the so-called ancient Rione dei Greci (District of the Greeks), near the Church of San Francesco.
The church dates back to the 16th century and has a single nave with a wooden rosette roof, decorated with a central 16th century canvas by the Roman school of artists, depicting the Nativity and surrounded by a latticed women’s gallery in gilded wood.
The masterpiece in this church is the early 16th century funereal Mausoleum for the Duchess Angela Castriota Scanderbeg, wife of Ferdinando Orsini of Aragona, the VI Duke of Gravina.
The monument, in precious white marble, from the Neapolitan School, rests on a base decorated with winged griffins. Two lateral lesenes, decorated with flowers and leaves, frame the funeral urn, which is protected with delicate serenity by two angels. The tympanum is decorated with a Madonna and Child.
A large section of the monastery is given over to a beautiful Cloister with a double loggia, containing columns with Corinthian capitals. An ancient decorated well stands in the centre of the cloisters.
