The Cathedral Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta

IX sec.

cattedrale.jpeg

The Basilica Minore, dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta, was built by the Normans at the end of the 11th century and reconstructed and enlarged at the end of the 15th century. It has a nave and 2 side aisles divided by columns, and all the capitals are sculpted with different designs. It contains many rich polychrome marble altars from the beginning of the 18th century. You can admire the baptismal font, a statue of San Michele from 1538 in “mazzaro” stone, the late 16th century walnut choirstalls, a stone altarpiece from 1536, a wooden 16th-17th century Crucifix, and an organ with 2135 pipes. The gilded wooden roof is richly decorated with 5 paintings. The cathedral crypt is also worthy of note.
